The increasing humidity can only mean one thing – Arizona’s monsoon season is here! From June through September, Arizonans may experience high winds, heavy rains, and even thunderstorms. So how does one go about preparing for harsh weather conditions? Quick answer: It all starts at home. Here are ways to prepare your home for monsoon season storms.
Protect your shades and awnings
The monsoon feeds on the summer heat and moisture, so naturally, the weather can be a bit erratic. One day the sun’s heat could be unbearable – and the next thing you know, the winds are howling and rain starts pouring. Strong winds can cause damage to your awnings and patio shades.
Check your roof and gutters
Before heavy rains start pouring, make sure to do a routine check your gutters. Monsoon winds can send debris flying into your gutters, clogging them. This can cause rain water to overflow and lead to water damage.
Brush up on Safety Practices
Monsoon Safety Awareness week (June 14-19) may have passed, but it’s never too late to educate yourself. The Arizona Emergency Information Network (AzEIN) has compiled a list of articles that can help you and the rest of your household prepare for weather hazards. In their website, you’ll learn how to build a basic emergency supplies kit, flood preparedness, and even pet safety during harsh weather conditions.
