For a number of homeowners, orientation matters when it comes to where the house faces. Many would opt for east-facing homes for that beautiful sunrise or a home that’s facing west for cooler mornings that are great for sleeping in. When you’re living in Arizona however, having an east-/west-facing house can actually lead to some problems.

For home efficiency’s sake, your best bet is to have a home that’s facing north or south. Here’s why:

East/West Facing House

With an east/west-facing house, the intense heat will be concentrated on the front and backyard, discouraging outdoor activities with loved ones. Arizona homes rarely have large windows on the sides, they’re usually located at the front & back of the home. The summer sun will beam into windows, and temperatures indoors will be a lot higher, giving you a higher demand in cooling costs.

North/South Facing House

Typically, a north-facing home will only allow heavy sunlight at the back and will be naturally cooler and darker than that of a south-facing home. In a place like Arizona this is typically the home you’ll want to look into to keep cooling costs down when the temperatures rise. Who wouldn’t want to save more money when you’re running the A/C so often?

What to Do When You Have an East- or West-Facing Home

If you have a home that faces east or west, your best solution is shade. Trees shading windows can help block heat & sun exposure from entering your home. If you are concerned about your view becoming obstructed, shade installations could be the answer.

Window Sun Screens provide you with increased privacy, where passersby cannot look inside, while you can clearly look outside. Installing Window Sun Screens on your home can save you up to 25% on Cooling Costs in the intense Arizona summer.

All Pro Shade Concepts is Phoenix’s most trusted when it comes to sun screens. You may be eligible for the SRP Screen Shade Rebate Program. SRP is offering customers a rebate of $0.80 per square foot on window screens installed by All Pro Shade Concepts.

Patio Shades keep your home cooler, and also serve as an added layer of shade for you and your guests, when the sun shines into your patio. All Pro provides manual and motorized options at your convenience.

Awnings can be installed to provide an extra level of protection from the sun. Installing retractable awnings also provides expansion of shaded outdoor entertainment space, which you can retract when not needed.
